Böhm #56 – New Landscapes

Die Böhm is a fanzine published by Katja Stuke & Oliver Sieber since 1999. Each issue is the juxtaposition of two different bodies of work, one each by Stuke and Sieber, under a single collective title.

Both photographers are concerned primarily with issues surrounding portraiture, the mediated image, the expressions of self-identity influenced by popular culture, in particular youth sub-cultures — Darius Himes, Photobookreview 2012

Die Böhm is published once or twice a year.

Böhm #55, Böhm #56 and Böhm #57 are created with images taken by Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber in and around Cervia (Italy) during their residency at Note di Sguardi (Giovanna Sarti) in 2023.

La Sente

Since 2018, Guillaume Greff has been tracking wolves and lynxes near his home in the Vosges mountains. Now a photobook about his work has been released. What the photographs in La Sente reveal is not so much the animal itself, but rather its mystery; a reserved, lurking, almost ghostly presence – an unsettling strangeness that haunts the landscape without ever fully surrendering to it. In this monograph, the images enter into dialogue with a series of accounts of tracking: fragments of the terrain, splinters of memory, suspended moments in which one can sense rather than see the fragile fabric of life.

19 2 9: Isle of Palma is the first chapter in the series of isolari.
Isolario is a branch of geography devoted to the description, in verse or prose, of individual islands, combining nautical, chorographic, and topographical elements, and sometimes providing anthropological and mythological information. The interest in islands stems from the peculiar character of insularity, which makes a land perceptible in its entirety.
Taking a cue from this practice, the work of the authors Martina Pozzan and Alberto Stievanin presents isolari in images, enriched with news and content from their own personal travel experiences.
Specifically in the Isle of Palma, from the glittering pageantry of the centerpiece of the city of Palma, dotted with views similar to those of the great continental capitals, but dropped into the touristy Mediterranean settings, we delve into the bowels of the island, and its primordial and material nature. The narrative is cyclical, leading the viewer to re-emerge immersed in a bucolic vision, closer to how the island might perhaps have appeared to early explorers.
Isolari as a kind of guide to an imaginary tourism, an invitation to an “other” journey for the reader.

L’ombre d’un doute is a black and white edition of a hundred pages, printed at the end of 2020 and limited to 50 copies. It presents a body of photographs taken between 2018 and 2020 in Brussels and especially its outlying suburbs, as well as during walks and cycle rides in the French, Belgian, Dutch and Luxembourg countryside.

Hotel Bellevue

Hotel Bellevue by Dries Segers is a beautiful, small photo book and a vocabulary centered around border trees, Celtic historical facts and visual speculation. This book is a manifesto for love, anger, the non-human, a wish to connect, to suggest, and to study. Only things from the heart deliver.
Mark trees are trees that are planted at strategic locations in the landscape. They make visible certain transitions of national, community and property borders. Multiple administrations monitor the conservation of these trees. Governments are obliged by law to maintain, replant and protect them. In a changing geopolitical landscape, however, these trees often lose their function as cultural-historical bearers and merge into their environment as non-information.
Trees have been present on this planet for 370,000,000 years. They have fallen into invisibility because they are losing their function in the landscape to a new, fuller panorama of symbols and signs. Road-building, agriculture and urbanisation have a lot to do with this, but so do technological and industrial progress. Centuries ago, some trees functioned as visual elements in a landscape in order to orient ourselves.

shelter, a short English word with multiple ramifications. It evokes the hermit, the poet, the refugee, the homeless person, the destitute, the domestic or wild animal passing by, the wanderer as much as the metaphor, the urgency, the necessity: to inhabit / to think – to join and meet / to share – to transport? to move? to hide? to
(re)settle? … to play?
Through images and text, shelter explores and declines fundamental questions – rhizomes and rebounds -: what are we building? for whom? why? who do we protect? from what? how? what is a shelter? a ladder? A scale? – a shell? a value? a temporality? – who lives where? how? why? with whom? what does this shelter, do these ladders, and scales, mean to you, us, them? To me? Could Memory (or love?) be the ultimate shelter(s)?

van A naar B

The edition van A naar B consists of a double folded image: Boat trip from Gran Canaria to Tenerife, with inside detachable texts. The texts are extracts from Glow by Sandor Marai and On seeing and noticing by Alain de Botton.
The story starts as a concrete, clear tale and ends in an amalgam of absurd sentences that somehow fit together. van A naar B focuses on the road – or deviation – between departure and arrival. In the same way that thoughts behave when considering a landscape, the spectator will also find himself erring through the story. At the same time the spectator can get lost when browsing through the texts.
