]]> Ankommen is a study of architectural infrastructure for state-provided accommodation for refugees in Germany. During the so called European migrant crisis from 2015 on Germany got known for its ‘welcome culture’ towards refugees. Since 2015 millions of refugees have arrived to the country and the state has had to react quickly trying to provide sufficient housing for the immigrants. In the fast paced urban planning process material and immaterial borders are created, making it challenging for the refugees to settle. Through photographic documentation, aerial views and official documents of regulations regarding refugee housing complexes the book raises a questions about the architecture’s impairing effects for refugees integration to German society. ]]> The name De Parel (The Pearl, La Perle, Die Perle, La Perla, Den Perlen, …), although indicating a precious possession, is a common name given to commercial businesses. Travelling around the Netherlands and Belgium, Liesbet Bussche photographed 28 businesses called De Parel. Her route is a necklace with pearls strung together via motorways. De Parel-ketting is a three meters long concertina, similar to the well-known souvenir for tourists; an accordion of postcards, a necklace of pearls.

„On a regular basis, I have sought out this fortress of red brick, with its tall towers that hover over and protect the partially concealed square. And despite its architectonic openness, it feels confined. I would not claim that we have become friends, this place and I, but one might say that we have become acquaintances of sorts. Familiar and unfamiliar faces appear, and like other outdoor spaces, it fills up and is emptied in accordance with the temperature.

I know each angle, each nook and cranny. I have fine-combed the area with my one-sided gaze. Not so much with the desire to disclose, as with the desire to comprehend and understand, so that I can finally feel some sense of belonging. Despite this, we cannot quite manage to gain one another’s confidence. It is as though the place wants to retain its secrets, as though I cannot come close enough.
