Please join us next week during malenki.NET #1 at Tique I art space in Antwerp. From Sept 26 through Sept 28 Tamami Iinuma, Liesbet Grupping, Oliver Leu, Lotte Reimann, Kathi Seemann, Rio Staelens and Hristina Tasheva will show and share their recent publishing-related work or work-in-progress in a spacial presentation and in lectures with visitors, like-minded people and professionals from the field of publishing, photography and art.

Hristina Tasheva about her research she will share during malenki.NET: “Encyclopedia of Pain is a work in progress that is inspired by my background and identity. Coming from the Eastern Bloc and living in the Netherlands, I am seen also as a ‘communist’ by the local people. To understand the ‘real’ meaning of this word, I decided to investigate the histories of the communists in the Netherlands during the WWII and the deeds of the Bulgarian communists in power against their ‘enemies’ after the war. Parts of my research are based on questions like: Were the communists victims or perpetrators? How do the present societies organize the places of remembrance of the victims of totalitarian regimes? And is it possible to build a narrative that is critical, but also ethical, able to provoke and to keep a dialogue that provides an understanding for ‘the other’?

Hristina Tasheva is a visual artist that uses her experience as an Eastern European migrant in Western Europe and her position as a citizen as a driving force in her work. In her publications narratives are constructed through images and text, exploring the questions: Is it possible to build identities based on similarities and not on differences? What is it like to be a human?
Hristina will talk about her work on Saturday, Sept 28 at 5 PM in English language.

From Sept 26 through Sept 28 the first edition of malenki.NET will take place at Tique I art space in Antwerp.

During these days a group of seven artist from different countries will show and share their recent publishing-related work or work-in-progress with visitors, like-minded people and professionals from the field of publishing, photography and art.

All our publications are on display at the gallery and can be purchased at our temporary book shop.

For Tique Salon #15, we invited several colleagues running vivid initiatives within the field of independent publishing to share insights about their vision and mission.

Brussels based platform eatmypaper was founded in 2016 by Camille Carbonaro to promote young Belgian and international artists revolving around independent publishing. eatmypaper runs a salon offering self-published work and small-scale editions, creative workshops and reflection on independent publishing in the field of photography, illustration, cartoons and graphic experimentation.

Isabelle Vanhoutte will speak about the art multiple Harmonie, which she distributes at different public locations in Antwerp since 2010. Within the limits of an envelope and a central theme, Isabelle invites artists to make interesting, gripping work to reach an unexpected public.

Ersi Varveri and Gijs Waterschoot, also from Antwerp, are currently running Pink House. They will introduce several zines and magazines being produced within their d.i.y. publishing workshop The ‘pINK hOUSE pRESS.

All talks are in English.

Wiels Art Book Fair

malenki.net would be happy to welcome you this weekend during Wiels Art Book Fair at Wiels in Brussels. This time we will share a table with UND EINS (Heidemarie von Wedel) and hesperus*print verlag. Next to our well-proven malenki.net program, you can explore f.e. Tidal Horizon the recent publication by Matthieu Litt, Forain, Kaffers en Bourin by Siska Vandecasteele and Antrum by Rio Staelens at our table. Tique I art paper #2 : Contemporary Camera will be available as well.

During Tique Salon #13, Brussels based collective Defrost Studio (Marco Tiberio and Maria Ghetti) will share insights about their project ImmoRefugee and photographer Thomas Nolf will present his publication Peculiar Artifacts in Bosnia and Herzegovina, published by APE in 2017.

ImmoRefugee is a publication based on a photographic project composed by 110 pictures showing the different typologies of houses in Calais, build by refugees. The work was meant to give a different perspective on the topic of migration, talking about a unique city that existed and it’s probably never going to be replicated. The exhibition ImmoRefugee is currently on view at Tique | art space.

Peculiar Artifacts in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the result of a 4-year project in Bosnia-and-Herzegovina where Thomas Nolf came across the existence of pyramids, stone spheres and other peculiar artifacts, discovered by Semir Osmanagich and his team. Aiming to draw an alternative biography that counteracts the post-war disillusion, Nolf photographed, intervened and ultimately tried to pedestal the phenomena as a history to believe in.

All talks will be conduct in English.

Kim Gorus will share a selection of artist publications focussing on the relation between image and language, authorship and originality/appropriation. In addition each work relates to Between Time and Timbuktu a tele-novella and publication by Kurt Vonnegut from 1972.

Her selection includes, among others, A Play by Uta Eisenreich & James Langdon (Roma 2016), The Ideal Form by Paul Hendrikse (Occasional Papers 2016) and Natalie Czech’s Je n’ai rien à dire. Seulement à montrer (Spector Books 2012).

Kim Gorus is the artistic and financial director of KultuurKaffee, a multidisciplinary arts centre at the heart of the Free University of Brussels (VUB). She was previously connected to St Lucas School of Arts Antwerp as a researcher, editor and lecturer, focussing on artist’s books and visual writing.

Thorsten Baensch (1964, Heide, Germany) has lived in Brussels since 1991. He is an artist and publisher, and has worked as a bookseller and book production manager in Cologne, Hamburg, Munich and New York. He studied painting in Brussels and Milan. In 1995 he established Bartleby & Co., which creates and publishes artists books and editions. His limited-edition books are in the collections of many prestigious institutions. So far more then 60 books and editions have been published.
