For Tique Salon #15, we invited several colleagues running vivid initiatives within the field of independent publishing to share insights about their vision and mission.

Brussels based platform eatmypaper was founded in 2016 by Camille Carbonaro to promote young Belgian and international artists revolving around independent publishing. eatmypaper runs a salon offering self-published work and small-scale editions, creative workshops and reflection on independent publishing in the field of photography, illustration, cartoons and graphic experimentation.

Isabelle Vanhoutte will speak about the art multiple Harmonie, which she distributes at different public locations in Antwerp since 2010. Within the limits of an envelope and a central theme, Isabelle invites artists to make interesting, gripping work to reach an unexpected public.

Ersi Varveri and Gijs Waterschoot, also from Antwerp, are currently running Pink House. They will introduce several zines and magazines being produced within their d.i.y. publishing workshop The ‘pINK hOUSE pRESS.

All talks are in English.

Tique Salon is formulated and organized by Katrin Kamrau (malenki.net) and Welmer Keesmaat (Tique).

Please join us for Tique Salon #14
on Wednesday, May 2nd, 2018, 7:30 PM
at Tique I art space, Korte Vlierstraat 5, 2000 Antwerp

For Tique Salon #14, we’ve invited Karina Beumer, Peter Lemmens and Brenda Tempelaar to present their artistic practice and latest publications.

A series of (in)direct questions to one or two or three authors of a casually collected set of publications without it being immediately clear whom or which publication these address.

Where do the characters go when the story ends? is both a book and a film trilogy by artist Karina Beumer. It comprises Beumer’s recent films Open for new challenges, Was het maar zo makkelijk (If only it were that easy) and We have to think of something else (part One and Two). The book chronicles each film frame by frame, interspersing images with texts by Eleanor Duffin, Brenda Tempelaar, Céline Mathieu, Ingrid Verhoeven, Dennis Van Mol, Els, Lise Lotte ten Voorde, Puck Vonk, Stijn Huijts and an accompanying ‘director’s commentary’ dialogue between Beumer and Publication Studio’s Yin Yin Wong, which documents the development of the book itself.

In the spirit of Beumer’s practice, this project is a process of accumulation. Within the films, scripts are build up by being repeatedly enacted, continuously altered and constantly renegotiated. Tools of communication — translation, indication, instruction, and explanation — become stage directions and create entry points for improvisation, weaving reality throughout the scripts that somehow, perhaps through the act of framing itself as art, becomes a fiction of its own. And just as the film becomes an exhibition becomes a book, the status of the participants shifts along with the work too — elements fold onto each other as people unexpectedly find themselves at once an incidental bystander and a star of the film, somehow signing their autographs at its book launch.

Peter Lemmens is an artist and initiator of publishing house Diversions Publishing. HOSTILE TAKEOVER, 2017 collects all publications produced between 2005 – 2017 for reprint under the new publishing house CONCAT BOOKS. Also a single new book, especially made for this new publishing house is added. All print-ready PDF files are copied to a USB flash drive. The publishing house has the non-exclusive rights to reprint all publications as it sees fit.

This publishing of a publishing house contains not just publications, but all the necessary means for publishing. It negotiates significant consequences as copyright value is traded for distribution value and ownership points out various stakeholder responsibilities as problematic. It’s part of an artistic practice that questions possible production, distribution and organisational strategies as intrinsic part of the work.

Artist and writer Brenda Tempelaar recently initiated and published The Exhibition Tower, an exhibition catalogue that features four exhibitions that took place at the Van Eyck academy in Maastricht. The exhibition venue is a one to ten scale model of a tower designed by OMA for Lafayette Anticipations, a new art institute that recently opened in Paris. The Exhibition Tower explores the 40 different configurations of its mobile floors, enhancing curatorial flexibility in a space with an ultimate height of 18 meter.

The catalogue contains photographic documentation of the presentations by Van Eyck residents Stéphanie Lagarde, Graham Kelly, GVN908 and Golnar Abbasi, who displayed their work in the context of the tower whilst imagining the full-scale project it was modeled after. The editorial essay Animating the Ghost Sonata draws a parallel between The Exhibition Tower and August Strindberg’s 1907 screenplay The Ghost Sonata, a story about expectations, dreams and house rules.

All talks can be conducted in English.

Tique Salon is formulated and organized by Katrin Kamrau (malenki.net) and Welmer Keesmaat (Tique).

During Tique Salon #13, Brussels based collective Defrost Studio (Marco Tiberio and Maria Ghetti) will share insights about their project ImmoRefugee and photographer Thomas Nolf will present his publication Peculiar Artifacts in Bosnia and Herzegovina, published by APE in 2017.

ImmoRefugee is a publication based on a photographic project composed by 110 pictures showing the different typologies of houses in Calais, build by refugees. The work was meant to give a different perspective on the topic of migration, talking about a unique city that existed and it’s probably never going to be replicated. The exhibition ImmoRefugee is currently on view at Tique | art space.

Peculiar Artifacts in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the result of a 4-year project in Bosnia-and-Herzegovina where Thomas Nolf came across the existence of pyramids, stone spheres and other peculiar artifacts, discovered by Semir Osmanagich and his team. Aiming to draw an alternative biography that counteracts the post-war disillusion, Nolf photographed, intervened and ultimately tried to pedestal the phenomena as a history to believe in.

All talks will be conduct in English.

Please join us for Tique Salon #12
on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, 7:30 PM
at Tique I art space, Korte Vlierstraat 5, 2000 Antwerp

During Tique Salon #12, Marc Nagtzaam and Hans Demeulenaere will talk about their collaboration. Since 2010, they worked together on several shows, individual works and publications. At the moment they are preparing a new publication on the occasion of a presentation at Emergent (Veurne).

Marc Nagtzaam (b. 1968) works mainly with drawing, text, artist books and occasionally sculpture. While Nagtzaam’s drawings are far from devoid of any sense of discovery, they are extremely programatic, composed of tight, deliberate gestures.
In 1998 Marc Nagtzaam and Roger Willems published Roma Publications number 1, entitled (SOME). Nagtzaam has been producing publications with Roma on a regular base ever since. At the moment he is working on 2 new books, ‘Regular Features’, which brings together text fragments collected and drawn between 1992 and 2018, and a book which collects fragments of drawings, sketches, installation views, Riso and laser prints; material Nagtzaam constantly re-arranges to make new drawings and installations.

Central to the research of Hans Demeulenaere (b. 1974) is the way we experience architectural objects and furniture within a sculptural reality. Sometimes, this way of experience is based on a ‘reflective’ processing of the objects, on the other hand on the change due to small additions or modifications. Since 2011 Hans Demeulenaere has produced several publications with such as MER. Paper Kunsthalle, Roma publications and posture editions. At the same other smaller publications are produced in collaboration with other artists or designers. Last year Hans Demeulenaere made a book at Frans Masereelcentrum during a residency. His book can be opened like a kind of harmonica as well as leafed through: one side with Demeulenaere’s own black-and-white images, and one in which his intellectual world unfolds for you in a concatenation of references.

All talks can be conducted in English.
Tique Salon is formulated and organized by Katrin Kamrau (malenki.net) and Welmer Keesmaat (Tique).

Reg Herygers will talk about the process of designing publications with and for artists.

Ksenia Galiaeva
The term ‘autocommunication’ as used by Yuri Lotman (the main figure in Russian semiotics), describes an internal dialogue during which the information changes through excessive repetition into a creative force and can instigate changes in personality. This form of self-dialogue Ksenia Galiaeva considers the basis of all her work. Autocommunication and East-Asian ‘tactics’ of dealing with contradiction, which are seen as more contextual, flexible, and dialectical as compared with Western thinking, were the starting points for collaboration of Ksenia Galiaeva with the South Korean artist/designer duo Jin Dallae&Park Woohyuk, resulting in the NOLEMON NOMELON book.

Reg Herygers
Reg Herygers is a Antwerp based graphic designer, director of the agency Undercast, teacher at Sint Lucas Antwerp and
co-organiser of the creative video event Upload Downtown.
He designed publications for and with artists, including Wesley Meuris, Arpais Dubois, Aline Vandeplas and Annelies Vanoost. Reg Herygers will present a selection of these publications, and will talk about the process of editing, designing and printing.

Finding his sources in a wide range of books & magazines, Manor developed an artistic practice focussing on defragmentation of figurative content using processes being linked to printing. Stephanie Kiwitt is using photography to observe public space and reflect on the increasing commercialization of everyday life in our affluent Western society. She will present her work Capital Decor in which she examines advertising strategies of discounters using image and sound. Capital Decor was published by Kodoji Press in 2011 as a leporello fold and a vinyl disc.
