opus incertum portrays a new reality, seeks to document episodes of urban construction, uncovers what lies behind the ostentation, reveals what is no longer seen.
opus incertum is also a tribute to the collective work and commitment of those who form society during the construction process, who ensure the transmission of methods and culture, and practice oral exchange in an exemplary show of solidarity, while remaining invisible.

In her recent work Open Equations, Laura J. Padgett continues her exploration into public and private space and the places in between. The way in which we structure and delineate our environment is always an expression of our relationship to society and is coincident to the visual. In many situations the gaze replaces our physical ability to enter a particular location.
The artist’s main theme remains photography’s ability to depict things while fostering conceptual narratives that can be experienced by means of perception.
How do we understand surfaces and space? How do we consciously negotiate these complex conditions? The visible, lines, colors, shapes and structures also express peoples’ relationships to their immediate surroundings and living conditions. The photographs open up these spaces, making them navigable.

When I moved into my studio in 2019 I was told that the building, probably from the 60ies in an industrial area of Hamburg and had once been a custom office, would be torn down soon to build a new living and shopping area. The room itself was small, squared and had a kind of platform at the two windows where I imagine the clerk sitting at their desk. The floor was a yellowish-brown linoleum and apart from that the room was empty when I moved in. In this dusty and frumpy atmosphere, I noticed little traces in the room, leftovers, stories from whom might have worked here. Scratches along the wall, probably from an office chair scrubbing. Holes from nails, at some places still screws in the wall. Crumbling plaster at the ceiling. This was the starting point of the series Office Figures. I started to fill the space with geometric shapes, stellar constellations, softened corners – and continued until I had to move out the following year. All materials used for these interventions in the room are discarded and found objects.

Stranded Places and other Landscapes

The meaning of a landscape is multi-layered and not predominantly a (natural) phenomenon with a determined dimension and circumference. A landscape can also occur completely concealed in the crevice of a rock or in a tranquil corner of a room, and can expand beyond the visual, to become, perhaps, an audible landscape. I conceive landscapes as spaces, objects and bodies, as sounds and smells, thoughts and (sensory) perceptions. I attempt to translate my experiences of landscapes into my artistic work, which, ideally, cater for a renewed participation in the experiences, both my own and those of others. — Uta Neumann

The book Plants and Soil – The Visual Development of a Structure contains a photographic sequence comprising forty images. Identified here as the pivotal element of a certain spacial configuration in an urban setting in the city of Hamburg, the photographs portray a topiary-like garden sculpture in the shape of a peacock.

The operation the goddesses Juno and Iris perform is a transformation (an abstraction) – from the globe of the eye (from bulbus oculi) to a pattern of plumage, from the organ of sight to an ornament (to illustration). A symbolic transplantation, taxidermy of a concept. By making the peacock the lasting bearer of the notion of Argos’ multi-ocular gaze, Juno maintains Argos’ legacy. It is without doubt the many-eyed Argos (the Panoptes – the All-Seeing) who, by his surveying gaze, is enabled to gain an exhaustive conception of an image of the world.

With reference to the latest theory of colour introduced by his contemporary Franciscus Aguilonius, Rubens based his allegory of seeing – and notably Iris’ accompanying rainbow – on a blue-red-yellow colour scheme. Aguilonius – otherwise known as Francois d’Aguilon – was a Brussels-born jesuit mathematician, a physicist and architect, the author of a six-volume treatise on optics and active in Antwerp at the same time as Rubens. Rubens contributed the frontispieces and several illustrations to his ‘Six Books of Optics’. In his comprehensive study Aguilonius explicates, inter alia, the principles of stereographic projection. Stereographic projection is a geometric function that projects a sphere onto a plane. It is used to make a coherent two-dimensional illustration from the three-dimensional thing – such as a map from the terrestrial globe. — SH
