Tout va bien maman brings together 60 photographs taken by Sandrine Marc in her neighborhood in Paris during the covid related lockdown in spring 2020. This photographs depict urban landscape in transformation in Ivry-sur-Seine and Nanterre. The zine, Tout va bien maman, published in 100 copies, is handmade. The pages, bound with gray thread, were printed on a Xerox copier. The zine was published by Sandrine Marc on the occasion of her solo exhibition at the Galerie du Crous (Nov 2022, PhotoSaintGermain Festival). It is a sequel to the work entitled “Change plus vite que le cœur”, which was self-published in 2018.

La Ville Invisible

»A single building’s history can reveal layers of the city that once was, showing how spaces constantly evolve. New cities emerge on top of the old, creating a complex landscape of urban plateaus.« (from the interview with Ivan Vartanian)
Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber have been working on »Cartographie Dynamique« since 2017. »Cartographie dynamique« is a virtual network connecting cities in Japan, Germany, France, China or India with the distinctive photographic works created in each location, often focussing on the transformation of the city.
The current chapter, La Ville Invisible, deals with the question of whether major events such as the Olympic Games or EXPO can be accelerators of urban change. To what extent they contribute to changing the understanding of private and public space. Do ideas of coming together, exchange and sporting competition still play a central role or are the arenas and pavilions just more ruins of the future?  The book contains images from Osaka, Tokyo, Paris, Seoul and Sarajevo taken since 2014.

Sakae Osugi

Sakae Ōsugi (*1885, †1923) was a Japanese anarchist. He traveled to Europe in 1923 and gave a May Day speech in Saint-Denis. There he was arrested by civilian police. He was sentenced to three weeks in prison and deportation for passport offences. On 2 June he was sent back to Japan where he later was murdered in the »Amakasu Incident«. In his book »My escapes from Japan« he mentiones a »workers’ hall« near the Basilica in Saint-Denis. Most likely he refers to the »Bourse du Travail« of Saint-Denis which was located in the Hotel de Ville at that time. In Feb 2023, almost 100 years after Sakae Ōsugi’s experiences in Saint-Denis, Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber walked from Hotel de Ville past Passage Saulger, rue des Ursulines and rue Suger until they finally reached Rue Génin, where you find the current Bourse du Travail«. Marie Tesson, the author of the text, constructed an itinerary, taking as her starting point the building where Stuke and Sieber ended their walk: the Bourse du Travail in Saint-Denis. She wanders through this area that is undergoing transformation until reaching the Tour Pleyel, attracted by the melancholy of its already outdated architecture.

Le Monde de demain: A prologue

Le Monde de Demain examines the transformation of urban spaces, the influence of hip-hop culture and the impact of the Olympic Games on the dynamics of the Greater Paris region. In January 2023, Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber had the privilege of meeting contemporary dancer Eman Hussein in Paris, whose dance practice is inspired by workers’ movements. This zine, Le Monde de Demain: A prologue, contains new works from their artistic research project Le Monde de Demain and additional photographs.

One reoccurring theme in Vutuc’s work is the transmission of information, complete with its natural selection, alteration and deformation throughout time. Here, captured images – fragmented, curated cuts of reality – are presented to be not just explored, but challenged in their fidelity as the question of their physical density gets rivaled by the comparable weight of copies; Vutuc pairs up the seemingly static format of photocopiers, celluloid and Super 8 film and, then, projection techniques – playing with layers of surfaces and transparencies as varying vibrations also audibly resonate, life fuses with machinery through celluloid and confusion, then doubt are introduced by a duality of projectors competing for validity in their respective outputs. — Aymeric Nocus

“Oliver Sieber and Katja Stuke […] are not permanent fixtures in this society: however, as resident artists at the Cité internationale des arts, they were confronted with the first “acts” of the yellow vest movement. In this sense, they are distanced observers and do not take sides, although they are not indifferent: they observe how the conflict writes itself into the city’s narrative. Their route follows and intersects with that of the actors involved that day, leading them along Rue de Rivoli, past the Louvre to La Madeleine, on to Gare Saint-Lazare, past the Métro Liège to the Galleries Lafayette, along Boulevard Haussmann to Place de la République, and at night back to the Bastille and the Cité des arts. Their perspectives keep shifting between the side of the road and the middle of the street, locating the actors—in the midst of all the activity on the street—in relation to the setting, recording the lesser defilements as well as the greater devastation, individual passersby being checked by plainclothes police officers and the wholesale deployment of the security forces. Their 113 photographs depict nothing more and nothing less than six hours of a day of protest, one act in this social drama, one more dies irae for French society, of which there have been an abundance recently, from the Charlie Hebdo and Bataclan attacks to the general strike and the demonstrations against police brutality. They capture the visible configurations of a social protest, whose political rhetoric remains unclear, and are thus equally eloquent as an account of the social fault lines within society. Three residency periods in Paris led to the series Et dans ce cas seulement. The pictures form a new chapter in Scenes of Wonder, a constantly growing collection of landscapes and cityscapes. In this work Marianne Hommersom focuses on the traces of human presence, light, textures, colors and on the way these elements come together in an often alienating, sometimes funny way.
