in respective order.

‘sunprints’ made in the shade of the mulberry tree,
grapevine and patio with hollyhocks and fragrant jasmine in the Eugeen Joorsstraat in Antwerp, in the summer of 2020 and 2021. Alternating between hammock and garden chair, feet under and on the table, I read de eerste keer dat ik mijn bed verloor by Colette. I reposition and light up the page. Squeeze the book, observe the shifting of the shadow and end up in the hammock in Cussangy where I got the idea to print this zomerboek. I read and walk through the garden with white pages, breathe slowly and count 8 minutes and 19 seconds, that is the time it takes for the sunlight to reach us and to expose the paper. Rinse with water and it turns blue.

This is the time of hydrangeas and unripe pears.

“The world is blue at is edges and in its depths. This blue is the light that got lost. Light at the blue end of the spectrum does not travel the whole distance from the sun to us. It disperses among the molecules of the air, it scatters in water. Water is colorless, shallow water appears to be the color of whatever lies underneath it, but deep water is full of this scattered light, the purer the water the deeper the blue. The sky is blue for the same reason, but the blue at the horizon, the blue of land that seems to be dissolving into the sky, is a deeper, dreamier, melancholy blue, the blue at the farthest reaches of the places where you see for miles, the blue of distance. This light that does not touch us, does not travel the whole distance, the light that gets lost, gives us the beauty of the world, so much of which is in the color blue.”

The edition van A naar B consists of a double folded image: Boat trip from Gran Canaria to Tenerife, with inside detachable texts. The texts are extracts from Glow by Sandor Marai and On seeing and noticing by Alain de Botton.
The story starts as a concrete, clear tale and ends in an amalgam of absurd sentences that somehow fit together. van A naar B focuses on the road – or deviation – between departure and arrival. In the same way that thoughts behave when considering a landscape, the spectator will also find himself erring through the story. At the same time the spectator can get lost when browsing through the texts.

Liesbet Grupping’s artistic work consists of the process of looking at things – impressions, natural and ephemeral phenomena as well as the observation that emerges of those. Trough the very undertaking of observing thoroughly the artist question the (inherent) ability (of an image) to evoke a certain reality and by extension a certain understanding. The use of photography and other (visual) instruments – not only to look at, or to look through, or even to look with – in translating ephemeral phenomena and transformations specific to nature reveals not only the pictured, but also the medium itself.
