Taoïsme by Patricia the Martyr
Zijde by Alessandro Baricco
Lofzang op de schaduw by Junichiro Tanizaki
De eerste keer dat ik mijn hoed verloor by Colette
De andere kant van de natuur by Rainer Maria Rilke
Nieuwe bloemengids by Tirion

‘sunprints’ made in the shade of the mulberry tree,
grapevine and patio with hollyhocks and fragrant jasmine in the Eugeen Joorsstraat in Antwerp, in the summer of 2020 and 2021. Alternating between hammock and garden chair, feet under and on the table, I read de eerste keer dat ik mijn bed verloor by Colette. I reposition and light up the page. Squeeze the book, observe the shifting of the shadow and end up in the hammock in Cussangy where I got the idea to print this zomerboek. I read and walk through the garden with white pages, breathe slowly and count 8 minutes and 19 seconds, that is the time it takes for the sunlight to reach us and to expose the paper. Rinse with water and it turns blue.

This is the time of hydrangeas and unripe pears.

Beyond Time is an attempt to translate how I think about spacetime into a series of photographs. It is inspired by the idea of imaginary time in which the flow of time is not linear. By experimenting in the darkroom the bodies in the photographs seem to be appearing out of – or disappearing into the cosmos. — Julie van der Vaart

Landscapes and bodies – these are two subjects that recur constantly in the work of Julie van der Vaart. Her photographic archive contains innumerabe monochrome series of nudes and romantic vistas, from which she can continually compile new series. Whether a photo was taken yesterday or two years ago is immaterial. The temporal dimension has recently started playing a greater part in her work. Inspired by theories of non-linear time, astrophysics and quantum mechanics, she has begun experimenting in the darkroom. For the “Beyond Time” series, she manually processed her photos with chemicals to produce bodies that seem to dissolve into the cosmos, simultaneously appearing and disappearing. A photo is prosaically a record of the past, but now it remains eternally afloat in imaginary time. — Merel Bem

The inner movement of gaining inner peace is the dynamic quest that moves Julie van der Vaart’s images. Especially in times in which we are overwhelmed by ubiquitous loudness and frenzy, inner peace is a most rare quality and state of heart and mind to achieve. One could almost assert that is a forgotten quality. — Virginia Tassinari

Leopold’s Legacy by Oliver Leu deals with the forms of representation of the colonial history in Belgium. In his speech from the throne in 1865 king Leopold II dreamed of a Belgium that would be bigger, stronger and more beautiful one day. When he became the private owner of the Congo in 1885 his dream started to become true. It ended when the Congo atrocities became known and the king had to hand his colony over to the belgium state in 1908.
In his project Oliver Leu is looking at the different aspects of the representation of the colonial past that are visible in monuments, buildings and citiescapes. He is also drawn to the hidden parts of this history. The artist questions how monuments change their meaning when we look at them today and how the perception of Leopold‘s role as a glorious king has altered in the last 100 years or more.

As a military application, a black and white film emulsion sensitive for infrared light was the key to break many codes. Infrared film is able to point out different absorbtions of thermal radiation, and thus reveal camouflaged installations. More specific camouflage techniques could be exposed by combining high grade black and white films and optic filters. Such colored filters provided huge possibilities for experimentation: isolating different wavelenghts to figure out color through black and white and laying out the pieces of the puzzle. These specialized imaging techniques were aimed to break ‘the most perfect cryptic powers’ and to reveal enemies with the chameleonic impulse. (3)
